Karaoke Mailbox

Posted In: Karoake Shows by Rockstar

We’ve been swamped with business lately, mostly due to Blarney’s, Longhorn, and some surprise jobs, and I finally had a chance to go through some mail.

Khris from New York writes….

I enjoy reading your blog about the karaoke KJ business.
I am an aspiring DJ/KJ trying to get into the business in the NYC area.
I am still in the process of getting my equipment together and networking
with bars and venues.
It would be a great help if you could answer some questions for me.
For example, I know every gig is different but some broad spectrum of
pricing or what to charge would be really appreciated.
Also, what are some good karaoke mics for under $100.
thx for your time

-khris

Well Khris, looking through my previous posts and articles, it appears you found something that I never wrote about, and it’s a very important subject when running a karaoke business.

First we’ll cover the dollars, then the mics. There are three main points that will ultimately decide your selling price, and I’ll try to make this as broad as possible to cover any other karaoke business located in other regions.

1) Amount of equipment and number of songs you have

2) What the ‘other’ guys are charging

3) The type of venue you’re playing

The first point is pretty easy, and it’s usually the standard metric used when comparing yourself to the competition and what they have to offer. Make no mistake about it, the equipment, transportation, and music is NOT cheap. Most venue owners don’t realize that, and usually frown on your price tag. DON’T be discouraged! Just beat the ‘other’ guys, and point number 1, will be handled.

The second point is very important, because this is where we find that balance between what the venue owner ‘needs’ and what you ‘want’. Lets say you’ve taken point number 1, and smashed the competition by spending $10,000 more on your equipment. Then lets say your competition is charging $350 to do a show. Looking at your equipment cost, you might think that charging $600 for your services is completely acceptable… but you’re WAY wrong! If the bar owner wants karaoke, then that’s all they want….nothing more. They won’t care that you have 10 wireless mics, two 1,000 watt subwoofers, four amps, and a gazillion songs. So pay VERY close attention to what the competition has (especially the song book), and beat them on their price structure. You’re the only one that can tell whether or not everything will pay for itself within a reasonable amount of time (i would shoot for a year though).

The type of venue - This situation came out of the blue a couple years ago, and we got dinged because we didn’t think it through. At first glance, you might think that KJ’s play just bars, but surprisingly you’ll find out that people will want you for weddings, birthdays, and many other occasions. First, set the same price for ALL bars. You might knock off $50 just to get your foot in the door on the first show (more on that later), then go back to your regular pricing. Also, birthdays and other odd-ball events could probably use the same pricing, depending on travel time etc.

For weddings tho, you NEED to charge more (we charge about $50 more), because you’re going to spend plenty of extra time getting all the required music, running little games, etc. However, if you’re like the service I work for, where we don’t have all the fancy lights and huge kickin’ system, then you’ll need to charge LESS than what a traditional service charges. Yes, it’s a very fine balance between all of these, but doing a little math will go a long ways.

Finally, as a side note, always keep in mind the travel time. Gas is way to expensive these days, so be sure to tack on some extra dollars for those long trips.

Let’s put all this together for a real life example - When we started out, we gathered about $6,000 worth of equipment and music. This included a small, yet expensive, trailer to haul everything around in. At the time, there was only one other person in the area doing karaoke. This person charged $125 for his services. However, we had four times the music, the equipment was much better, and James has some incredible hosting/mic skills. Knowing that a live band could cost anywhere between $500 and $2000, he set the price at $250 for 4 hours worth of work. Shows would run from 9pm-1am, and we’d toss in an extra half hour for free.

Obviously, there was a minor dispute about how much we charged as one owner knew he could get the other service for half price…. which happen to be someone he never used before. Needless to say, when the smoke cleared, our services have been the ONLY service to walk in those doors since then. Our price perfectly reflected what we ‘brought to the table’, versus what the other guy could offer and surrounding situations. At the same time, the price paid for the equipment in a reasonable amount of time.

For weddings, we charge $300, which is about $200 to $300 less than a traditional service. The price cut reflects the fact that we don’t have all the bells and whistles a traditional service has, yet the extra $50 covers the cost of finding all the songs requested by the couple (get that list ahead of time), and basically taking on a much more active roll with the party. Most people think it’s a fair price, while others wanna splerge and get the ‘big players’…. don’t let that get ya down, cause it’s normal.

With all that info, I’m certain you’ll nail that price down within 10 minutes. ;)

As for the mics - Finding mic’s for under $100 is pretty easy. Finding GOOD mic’s for under a $100 is extremely difficult. Make no mistake about it, a cheap mic (or cheap ‘anything’ in your setup) can cause many undesirable affects. Dare I say ‘Feedback’? So far, we’ve dropped the cash and gotten ourselves some Audio Technica mics. Mind you, these can get spendy, but hands down… they have been the best mic for the buck, so far. I very rarely EVER have to fight feedback, and the sound quality is excellent. Trust me… save your money, and get good mics. You will NOT regret it! ;)

F*** yeah!! Saturday nights karaoke at Blarney’s was killer!

Overall, the start was pretty good, the crowd was diggin’ it, etc. Then, later on in the evening, Mitchell’s very own Mike Miller (and his friends) made a surprise appearance. Him and his crew sang some karaoke, and really ripped things up all night long.

We’d like to thank Mike for the appearance, and wish him good luck with his recent move to the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m sure he’ll be much happier closer to home…. I know his fans are!

Karaoke @ Blarney’s

Posted In: Karoake Shows by Rockstar

Another rockin’ karaoke night at Blarney’s tonight. I heard, and don’t quote me on this, that Thursday nights are Ladies Nights….. will need to confirm.

The new mic’s are holding up very well, and though they won’t get pushed too far tonight, I’m sure we’ll be maxing them out on Saturday…. for ANOTHER night of karaoke at Blarney’s.

Guess people just can’t get enough. ;)

The competition, that is!

A friend of a friend of a friend’s twice removed second uncle, told me that the ‘other’ karaoke hot spot in town was completely dead the night Rockstar Karaoke was down at Blarney’s. The Saturday night shows are kickin’ ass too! Since I happen to work those shows, I see much of the common client base….

“SNAP!!!”

Uhm… yeah… Inside joke.

Anyways, it’s my understanding that a friend of ours (Kelly) is quite handy with the camera. I’ll have to make a mental note to ask for photo’s all the time.

The new system is kicking ass, new mic’s have arrived (they work AWESOME!), and business is moving up. Everything is looking great, and it seems we get more of a following every time we play a show. ;)

Blarney’s

Posted In: Idle Rock Chat, Karoake Shows by Rockstar

Is that even spelled correctly? Pretty bad when I don’t even know how to spell the clients name. hahahah

Anyways, karaoke at Blarney’s(?) this weekend. Last time we were there, the crowd was kickin’, but the feedback was terrible. I had to wrestle the PA all night. I think we’ll reconfigure a few things this time around.

The new song book is kicking some ass, and starting to see some new faces in the crowds. Don’t know if it’s the weather, or if things are moving in a forward direction… maybe both. Still, much could be done on the PA, but it can wait for now.

Also, we need some pictures of the shows we do. Might have to work something out for that…. maybe a prize give away. Hmmm…. might have to talk to some online buddies before I get into that one.

So yeah… it’s been a while. I haven’t been hitting the karaoke scene in some time for a thousand reasons I won’t bother going into here. But the outfit I work for had a couple of nice updates recently, and thought I’d share.

First off, James decided to go all digital. Dell laptop, karaoke software, the whole nine yards. I got a glimpse of it the other day, and I’ll have to drop that software title later (rotten memory). It has just about everything you’d expect, but the best feature is the ’search’ function. At least two (if not, a hundred)  times a night, I get someone walking up to me asking “Do you have the song _____ ?”

Which means I spend a portion of time digging through the book, trying to remember how to spell names, and inevitably checking both the artist section and the song section. But with this new search feature, I can just pop in a few letters and BAM!.. instant tracks.

In addition to the ‘all digital’ setup, he also dropped the cash for a TON of new music. The new song list reaches more than 17,000. A far cry from the 3,000 we had before. Recent editions include The Eagles (had NONE before), a truck load of Elvis, and a lot of rock… good rock. There are several Metallica, a few Manson tracks, some Nine Inch Nails, a little Megadeth, and believe it or not….. Slayer. Seasons in the Abyss to be precise.

In other news, another local pub picked us up for some shows. In fact, tonight is one of ‘em, at Blarney’s in Mitchell. Whats weird is, they booked us for another one in April, and they haven’t even heard us yet. Either word is spreading, or they sent out the scouts.

So that’ll be a nice change of pace, fresh music, new scenery… maybe we can snag another show here or there in the future.

Longhorn

Posted In: Karoake Shows by Rockstar

RK is doing a show at the Longhorn again this coming weekend, and I hope it was as good as last time…. the place was packed, wall to wall!

Needless to say, I was busy as all heck, and could barely keep up.

Despite the frustration, and karaoke tickets from hell, it turned out to be a pretty good night. Though, daylight savings time kept us out an hour later. Never realized how much difference a lousy hour can make in a night.

On nights like these tho, you often get that little ‘music gem’, where someone will sing something completely out-of-the-blue. And this particular show gave us an excellent version of ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’, by Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong. The guy singing sounded awesome! Hit every note, and the voice sounded like it was straight from a ’70s recording.

We almost didn’t play it, because the last two times we’ve tried, for some reason the track started skipping like crazy… right in the middle of the song. The disc looks fine too, so I’m a little confused at whats going on there. Hopefully the karaoke machine isn’t on it’s way out! ;)

Guess we’ll find out on Saturday…..

Slowly but Surely

Posted In: Karoake Shows, Site News by Rockstar

Yeah yeah yeah. I know already. The site hasn’t been updated in nearly the amount of time that it should have been.

Well, I finally got that one tool done. Took quite a while trying to find someone willing to make it for me, at a cheap price. hahahah

It’s nothing special, and I’ve got to add some finishing touches to make it all work. But at least the hard part is done, and I can move on. Problem is…. the next programming set I need is much more complicated, and I’ll need to build up some cash to pay someone to do it correctly.

As for the other tool, I don’t plan on releasing it until I have everything done at one time. At which point, I’ll be unleashing a whole new navigation on the main site, with new articles, tools, etc. Just wish I could get it all done right now, as even “I’m” excited to see how the new site turns out.

Karaoke? Well, things have been getting tight in the Mitchell area. Our usual hang out slacked off on us, and didn’t hire us back for a while. But now, I think things might start picking up again.

A long-time friend came down to see me at this last show. What a hoot! She coaxed me into singing (if thats what you wanna call it), and I completely made an ass outa myself.

Uhm….. yeah….. thats why I just put the disc in the player. ;)

Woonsocket

Posted In: Karoake Shows by Rockstar

Got booked for a family reunion in Woonsocket. Didn’t see that one coming, but I’m not complaining.

Which reminds me, somehow I’m going to need to get my Jeep into the shop. It’s parked in my garage right now, and the other day I noticed a wet spot on the floor right underneath the transfer case (differential?). Not good….

I already had those darn seals replaced several months ago, AFTER I had to replace everything that went out. Uhg… don’t think it ever ends.

Oh well, things will get better, and shows like this really help.

Storms Everywhere

Posted In: Karoake Shows by Rockstar

I personally didn’t witness the karaoke show this weekend as I was stuck out of town, dodging tornado’s.

Naw… It wasn’t that bad, but there were sightings all around us. Luckily, my family was ok. The winds were very strong tho, and wiped out the power. My father-in-law hooked up the generator, which got us through the night.

I’ll have to speak with James to see how the show went….

Other than that, there is a show coming up at the Longhorn again, in a couple weeks, AND we have a retirement party down in Lake Ande’s. How cool is that!! I won’t be at the Longhorn show, but I’ll be going to the party, which I’m thinking is going to be one heck of a good time.

The retirement party will be on the 26th of May, at the VFW (i believe). Will keep you posted….
